In group play, a good deal of the game's enjoyment comes from discussing moves and strategies together. Since the game is turn-based, you have as much time as you want to plan your next move before the next player or opponents take their turn. You move your character manually across a tiled playing field by picking up the character and setting it down again at the desired point. Along the way, you'll encounter all sorts of enemies: from rats and slimeballs to wizards, goblins, giant spiders, and cave trolls. The goal is to descend to the lowest level of a dungeon and defeat the boss. Each class has its own strengths and weaknesses and unique abilities. You can choose from a guardian, wizard, hunter, bard, or assassin. Thanks to the possibilities of virtual reality, you can move freely across the board like a ghost or shrink to the size of a character piece and experience battles up close.Īt the beginning of each round, you choose one of five character classes. But not just any board game: Demeo is a magical board game that brings the game world, characters and monsters to life before your eyes. And, as with previous titles from the studio, the developers plan to keep the game updated with new content over the long term.įor this review, I played Demeo in single-player mode and in a group setting with fellow MIXED writers.ĭemeo is a strategic tabletop role-playing game that simulates the game situation itself: It puts you in a virtual basement where you meet up with friends for an evening to play a board game. The game was in development for around three years, according to CEO Tommy Palm. Whether it's Angry Birds VR, Cook-Out, or Blaston ( review): The Swedish studio knows how to make good games and use the strengths of the medium.ĭemeo is the studio's biggest and most ambitious project to date. The conditions for this to succeed are good: Resolution Games has become one of the best VR studios in recent years. Both are in short supply in the world of VR games.ĭemeo wants to kill all three birds with one stone. Together with VR players, of course.īut that's not the only gap that Demeo wants to close: The VR gaming community is also thirsty for titles with role-playing flair and gameplaying ambition. There are only a few VR games that you can play with others, and if you do, friends without VR headsets are left out.ĭemeo is different: The game is designed for up to four VR players, and from April 7, 2022, 2D players can also join the adventure via Steam. There are plenty of default colors available and you can earn hats by unlocking achievements (to make things more interesting, we suggest you try and find them yourself).Demeo wants to combine co-op fun, fantasy role-playing, and gameplay depth in one VR game. We just figured we'd mention that, ya know. Use shotguns, rocket launchers, mines, and single-bladed or double-bladed laser swords to slash, crush, blow up and… oh, hang on, there's something else… it only takes one hit to kill in this game, which means that with certain weapons you might be offing yourself along with your enemies. You're welcome to come up with a strategy in the beginning and stick to it, but you don't have to-just let inertia and random chance make your gameplay unpredictable.Ĭrush your enemies with a mind-blowing variety of weapons Now imagine all that but in zero gravity (yes, there's a level like that!).Įach arena has its own unique features, and while some may help you, others will bring the pain. The physics system here is so much more than just swinging from webs: do a somersault, push off of your opponent, swing your sword 360°, get stuck, wiggle your way out, and deal the killing blow as you land on your enemy's head. Limitless potential for gravity-defying stunts And if you feel like making friends so you have someone to play with, use the quick search to find random opponents or visit our Discord channel. Sure, you can play with your friends: co-op or against each other, local or online… But what if you don't have any friends? Don't worry, we're here to give you a big hug and let you know that there are tons of solo modes, too. Play alone or get the squad in on the action What mode are you in the mood for today? Cut down waves of enemies or create modded duels fight one-on-one or try to make it through the challenges-then try again, and again, and again… Alternatively, you can just spend your time putting cute hats on the spiders. Choose to take on waves of ferocious enemies as a lone wolf (spider), or join forces with your friends, then challenge them to a duel afterwards so you can gleefully watch them do a neat trick before they launch themselves face-first into the lava.īattle it out, have fun, or… uh. SpiderHeck is a fast-paced couch co-op brawler where spiders battle it out in a deadly dance of chaos. Your goal is simple: try and survive fights to the death.
